PARKROYAL Collection KL is a study in biophilic design. Located at an intensely built-up urban centre; surrounded by major roads – the design turns the existing enclosed concrete building into a refreshing green lung, 78 sky planters, framed in steel cantilever 2.6m into the air, creating a lush green façade. 13,000 sqft of greenery were planted in the façade and green terraces, featuring over 100 plant and tree species – helps to shade hard surfaces, reducing reflected heat; showing that rather than demolition (incurring further carbon footprint) older buildings can be vigorously rehabilitated to become attractive and meaningful additions to the city.

Design statement.

Extensive sky planters bring lush greenery directly into every other guest room and public area – creating unique garden spaces. Urbanistically the lush greenery is highly visible, ending vistas from surrounding streets and buildings.

The garden concept is extended into all public areas creating a continuity from outside to inside. Reception, dining, and lounge spaces are enlivened by greenery which permeates all aspects of the guest experience, creating an intimate connection with nature. The ballroom is transformed into a high volume garden space filled with natural daylight. Lush tropical trees and shrubs create a suitable backdrop for celebrations, screening guests from the nearby monorail for privacy.

The architectural promenade culminates at the pool level which is realised as a verdant green oasis with large 6-7mm trees screening the pool area. Throughout the hotel, greenery complements the warm and natural finishes creating a resort-like ambience, right in the heart of the city.
